Special performance of scenes from a risqué melodrama about prostitutes and Bowery lowlife that were so common at the turn of century the genre was called the brothel play. Then – as now – America worried and obsessed about the modern woman, sex in the city and women’s rights. Kate Carew wrote and drew about these issues in 1910, highlighting the abuse of streetwalkers, some of whom were called ‘white slaves’. Vice as social issue and drama.
